About This Place

Pelmeni Pelmeni is a delightful Eastern European gem nestled in the heart of Portland, specializing in authentic Ukrainian and Russian dumplings that cater beautifully to a variety of dietary preferences, including gluten-free and vegetarian options. This cozy dumpling restaurant at 1080 SE Madison St invites you to embark on a culinary journey rich in tradition and heartwarming flavors.

Step into Pelmeni Pelmeni and you’ll immediately sense the warmth and passion that infuse every dish. Their menu shines with signature items like the Small and Large Chicken Pelmeni and the juicy, tender Beef Pelmeni Dumplings, each topped with a delectable trio of sour cream, green onions, fresh dill, and a uniquely crafted house tomato sauce that elevates every bite. For a comforting vegetarian option, the Potato Vareniki Dumplings offer a deliciously chewy and soft texture, perfectly balanced with the same thoughtful toppings.

No visit is truly complete without sampling their Borsch Soup, a vibrant vegan Ukrainian beet soup that arrives steaming hot, paired nicely with sour cream and dark bread on request — an earthy, soulful start to the meal. Complementing the savory dishes is their house-made Kvas Malt Drink, a naturally fermented, nonalcoholic beverage that refreshes the palate with its subtle tang and malt undertones.

The dining atmosphere carries an inviting, unfussy charm reflected in the friendly service and authentic presentation. Customers consistently praise the warmth and attentiveness of the staff, as well as the freshness and quality of the food. Talia Bootz shares her love for the potato vareniki, describing it as "so delicious — topped with a tomatoey sauce, sour cream, and fresh dill... perfectly chewy and soft," while Matthew P highlights how the sweet and savory pelmeni options “are made with love and passion,” making each visit memorable. Meanwhile, J. Stephen Lee appreciates the perfect harmony of cold sour cream, tangy sauce, and fresh scallions, suggesting a kick of hot sauce for those who enjoy spice.

Whether you're a seasoned fan of Eastern European cuisine or exploring these flavors for the first time like Hala Samaan, who found her "great introduction" to Russian food here, Pelmeni Pelmeni’s welcoming ambiance and robust menu offerings ensure a deeply satisfying experience. Don’t forget to try their sweet dumplings like the Sweet Cheese Dumplings or treat yourself to classic Ukrainian candies and lollipops to round off your meal on a nostalgic note.

In every bite, Pelmeni Pelmeni delivers the rich heritage and comforting taste of Ukraine, transformed with care and authenticity into dishes that feel both timeless and excitingly fresh. Whether craving a hearty lunch or a soulful dinner, this Portland treasure promises food that’s not only deliciously chewy and fresh but also fills your heart with warmth and a touch of Slavic hospitality.

Really, really good. Warm, filling, and fresh. I got the potato vareniki and it was so delicious — topped with a tomatoey sauce, sour cream, and fresh dill. The dumplings were perfectly chewy and soft, and the whole dish was delivered steaming hot. The woman was also very kind. Never had anything quite like it — I will definitely be back!

I’ve been here twice now and love the food. The pelmeni has a great texture and I like ordering this with all the toppings. The cold sour cream, sauce, and scallions are a great complement to the pelmeni. If you like spicy, be sure to add the hot sauce when you pick up your food. I’ve ordered the small and large chicken pelmeni from here. I actually prefer the small size because it seems to have a better ratio between toppings and pelmeni.

Absolutely loved this pelmeni spot. You can tell the food is made with love and passion. I haven’t had pelmeni dressed the way they made them and very much liked it. The sweet and the savory. The savory ones were so so good.

The sweet ones were extra tasty but the quantity is large so make sure to have someone to share with :)

Was super stoked to try this place and it did not disappoint. Located in a central part of Portland in an enclave of other food trucks, it was super easy to find and we ordered relatively quickly on a rainy afternoon here in Portland. The person behind the counter was super nice and we received our food relatively quickly. Everything was absolutely delicious, from the potato dumplings to the sweet cheese dumplings, to the borscht. My god the borscht was unbelievable. It was a huge helping And just so flavorful and perfect for a cold rainy day here in Portland. You need to get the borscht! Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I would be happy to eat here again for my next visit in Portland. Thank you so much, Pelmeni Pelmeni!

These dumplings are amazing. I usually get the chicken dumplings. Toss your dumplings around and spread the toppings & tomato sauce evenly for best taste!

Stopped here on a whim while checking out the food pod court. This place is fantastic. We had the beef and the vegetable dumplings. My friend also ordered the borscht and really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.
